The use of scaled relief models in the contexts of Information, Communication and Education dates back to the XVII century.

The use of Participatory 3D models in the same context is a more recent practice.

Recorded uses include among others the following:

Introducing visitors to a given area;

Visualizing and geo-referencing intangible heritage to support cultural identity building.

Visualizing geo-referenced traditional spatial knowledge on land use and cover, resource distribution, access, control and tenure;

Visualizing uphill soil erosion and downhill sedimentation pattern;

bullet

Visualizing on the territory human settlements (households) and social infrastructure (schools, heath centers, government offices, community centers, meeting places, water supply points, roads, communication facilities, etc.).
